Mica Lamp shade panels have been used as a decorative lamp shades over many years. The combination of the mica flakes with the contrasting color intensity and tones of the binding resins create a unique, random lighting effect. Its primary use has been in lampshades and ceiling panels. Mica Lamps began showing up in early American homes before 1900, and the clear mineral mica probably gained popularity because of its resistance to heat and flame, because early mica lamps were oil or candle lamps rather than the new electric mica lamp.
Mica is a mined mineral which varies slightly in color primarily within a range of intensities of ruby or green. The color tends to vary from mine to mine and even within a mine. The most prevalent binder for this type of product is shellac. It too is a naturally occurring material and is subject to variations from orange to dark amber in color. It is an annual crop which is affected by weather and other environmental effects. The uniqueness and variability of the product has proven to be appealing.
In an attempt to offer a variety of decorative mica lamp panels, we offer the product with either the natural shellac or a colorless synthetic epoxy. Another variation is available by using mica lamp panels which have naturally occurring stains caused by inclusions of foreign material in the crystals when formed millions of years ago. We refer to this as stained mica.
